US continues to withhold link 16 from Ukrainian F-16s

As Ukraine strengthens its defence capabilities, acquiring advanced offensive weapons like the AGM-158A JASSM cruise missiles remains critical. Equally important, however, are sophisticated communication systems such as Link 16, which are essential for coordinating military operations. While widely used by NATO forces, the US is reluctant to share this technology with Ukraine, fearing it could fall into Russian hands.

General Christopher Cavoli, who oversees NATO and US forces in Europe, highlights Link 16's significance in ensuring effective air and missile defence operations, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The system enables the rapid and accurate exchange of data regarding targets and combat situations. Without Link 16, the operational effectiveness of the F-16s Ukraine is set to receive from allies—such as Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway—will be significantly limited.

Although JASSM missiles can strike deep into Russian territory, the coordination provided by Link 16 is crucial for successful battlefield operations. The absence of this system could result in higher casualty rates for Ukraine, prolonging the ongoing Russian aggression due to the constraints on Kyiv's defensive strategies.

Link 16 is a tactical data exchange system vital for NATO and US allies, facilitating real-time sharing of critical information like enemy and friendly positions among various military units, including aircraft and ground forces. This secure communication link is essential for effective coordination during complex combat scenarios.

Utilizing Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology, Link 16 ensures efficient communication across multiple platforms, maintaining reliability even in the face of electronic interference. It integrates seamlessly with military assets like the F-16 and Patriot systems, providing a comprehensive battlefield overview to minimize coordination errors.

The importance of Link 16 becomes particularly evident in crisis situations. Without this system, Ukrainian F-16s would struggle with operational effectiveness, lacking network-centric coordination and essential tactical intelligence necessary for modern military missions.

The US hesitates to provide Link 16 to Ukraine due to concerns that Russia could potentially uncover and compromise the technology. Although Link 16 employs encrypted communications, no system is entirely secure, especially under battlefield conditions.

A significant risk arises if Ukrainian aircraft equipped with Link 16 are shot down over Russian-held territory. In such cases, Russian forces could gain physical access to the system’s components, allowing their cybersecurity experts to analyze and reverse-engineer its communication protocols.

Moreover, Russia's established expertise in electronic warfare includes capabilities for signal interception and analysis. During actual combat, it is likely that Russian forces would attempt to disrupt communications to gather insights on Link 16's frequencies, encryption, and network structure.

Continuous monitoring of this data could enable Russian experts to identify vulnerabilities for future cyberattacks or develop countermeasures. Another concern is that even partial access to Link 16 might allow Russia to enhance its own communication technologies. This could lead to the discovery of weaknesses within the system or the creation of countermeasures, reducing its effectiveness in future conflicts.

This situation underscores a significant risk: providing Link 16 to Ukraine could compromise the technology while simultaneously enhancing Russian electronic warfare capabilities. Such a scenario poses threats not only to Ukraine but also to the broader NATO defence framework.

If the Ukrainian Air Force does not receive the Link 16 system, it will face significant challenges in coordinating air and ground operations. This system is vital for real-time data exchange among aircraft, ground troops, and air defence units. Lacking Link 16, Ukrainian pilots would miss critical combat information and rely on outdated communication methods, which could lead to delayed threat responses and the potential for overlooking key targets.

Furthermore, the absence of Link 16 would hinder collaboration with other NATO forces, as it is a standard within the alliance. Without this network, the Ukrainian Air Force risks becoming isolated in tactical coordination and intelligence sharing, increasing the chances of coordination errors that could result in misdirected attacks and substantial battlefield losses. Ultimately, this would restrict Ukraine's ability to execute complex operations against Russian forces.
