Violent attack on Mexico bar leaves 10 dead
Gunmen attacked a bar in the central Mexican city of Queretaro on November 9, killing 10 people, a local security official said.
The attackers opened fire inside the Los Cantaritos bar, located in the city's historic district, according to Juan Luis Ferrusca, head of Queretaro's public security department, Caliber.Az reports referencing foreign media.
"Emergency services arrived and confirmed that at least four armed individuals arrived in a pickup truck, carrying long weapons," Ferrusca said in a video shared on social media.
"Inside, 10 people were found dead, and at least seven others were injured," he added.
The victims included seven men and three women, with seven others reported injured.
One suspect was arrested, and the vehicle used in the attack was discovered abandoned and set on fire, Ferrusca stated.
Queretaro, known as one of the safer cities in Mexico, has been relatively unaffected by the escalating violence driven by drug trafficking and criminal gangs. Since 2006, more than 450,000 people have been murdered across the country due to such violence.
On October 25, a shootout between rival Mexican cartels left 16 people dead in Guerrero state. The region has become a battleground as cartels vie for control of territories. In that incident, two local police officers were killed, and four others were injured. Of the remaining 14 victims, 12 were believed to be members of criminal organizations, and 11 individuals were arrested. The National Guard also responded, with three military officers injured.
The violence comes amid growing pressure from the United States on Mexico to intensify its efforts against drug trafficking, while Mexico has urged Washington to take stronger measures to curb the flow of firearms to criminal groups across the border.
