Western Azerbaijan Community urges safe return of expelled Azerbaijanis 33rd anniversary of expulsion
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the expulsion of the last Azerbaijanis from Armenia, the Western Azerbaijan Community said in a statement.
After the Armenian authorities forcibly relocated the residents of Nuvedi village of Zangezur region from their native lands on August 8, 1991, not a single Azerbaijani remained in Armenia, Caliber.Az reports, citing the statement.
This final deportation, which began in 1987, culminated in the forced removal of 300,000 Azerbaijanis from Armenia—a tragic chapter in human history.
"The Western Azerbaijan Community reiterates that it will never accept this injustice. We demand to create conditions for the safe and dignified return of Azerbaijanis expelled from the territory of present-day Armenia. This right to return is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other important acts.
We call on the international community to support the provision of security for Azerbaijanis to return to their native lands, as well as support for the adoption of international acts with appropriate verification mechanism and guarantees that will be legally binding. We also condemn all attempts of discrimination on ethnic and religious grounds in the issue of the right of return and emphasize the need to respect the principle of reciprocity and equality in this issue," the Community said.
