Azerbaijan, Council of Europe sign another document

Azerbaijan has signed the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe (CE) Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism.

The Protocol was signed at the Council of Europe headquarters in Strasbourg in the presence of the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Fakhreddin Ismayilov, and Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjorn Berge, Report informs.

The Council of Europe has adopted an Additional Protocol to the European Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism to counter foreign terrorist fighters, as well as an Action Plan to combat violent extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism.

The protocol, prepared for signing on October 22, 2015, envisages certain requirements of the Security Council’s resolution 2178 (2014), such as the obligation to impose criminal liability for trips to third countries for terrorist purposes (for example, to undergo terrorist training), participation in the activity of a terrorist group and undergoing training for terrorist purposes.

The provisions of the Protocol require all sides to create permanent coordination centres to facilitate the rapid exchange of information on people suspected of traveling to other countries for terrorist purposes.

After the completion of the corresponding domestic ratification process, the Additional Protocol, in accordance with Article 10, will enter into force with respect to the Republic of Azerbaijan and will serve as an additional contribution of our country to international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
