The new type of submarine project, under which five Reis-class submarines will be built, is reaching new milestones.
The Ministry of National Defence said in a statement on the matter: "The second ship of the new type submarine project, TCG Hızır Reis, was launched at the Gölcük shipyard on May 25, 2023. Good luck to our sailors," the statement said.
The submarines, referred to in international literature as Type-214TN (Turkish Navy), were first named Djerba Class. After a refinement process, they became known as the Reis Class, the current name. The New Type Submarine Project (YTDP) signed between Defence Industry Board (SSB) and German company TKMS on June 22, 2011 plans to build 6 Reis class submarines at Gölcük shipyard with maximum internal input.
The air-independent propulsion submarines (AIPS) are known worldwide as the most advanced submarines after nuclear-powered submarines (NPS).
HAVELSAN, ASELSAN, AYESAŞ, STM, KOÇ BILGEM, TÜBİTAK, and MilSoft have developed important systems within the project.
The submarines to be built in this scope will be called TCG Piri Reis, TCG Hızır Reis, TCG Murat Reis, TCG Aydın Reis, TCG Seydiali Reis, and TCG Selman Reis and will be delivered to the Turkish Navy Command in 2028.
The main characteristics of the Reis class submarine:
- Length: 67.6m (about 3m longer than standard submarines)
- Boats' thread diameter: 6,3 м
- Height: 13.1 m (without periscopes)
- Submerged displacement (in diving): 2.013 т.
- Speed (surface): 10+ knots
- Speed (under dive conditions): 20+ knots
- Crew: 27
Reis class submarines are armed with 8 533mm torpedo tubes, 4 of which are capable of firing sub-harpoons.
