Serzh Sargsyan's party fellow arrested for two months in Armenia
The deputy chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (Chairman Serzh Sargsyan - Ed.) Armen Ashotyan has been arrested for two months.
His lawyer Tigran Atanesyan stated this immediately after the court hearing, Caliber.Az reports quoting Armenian media.
"He will be transferred to Nubarashen penitentiary, although he is a former minister and a lieutenant colonel of the medical service, he will be kept with the criminals. This is a kind of revenge," said the lawyer.
Atanesyan stressed that there is no evidence against Ashotyan. The lawyer added that he considers the decision groundless and intends to appeal it in a higher court.
Armen Ashotyan was detained on June 15.
The Investigative Committee said that the politician violated the terms of the preventive measure imposed on him.
Armen Ashotyan and the former rector of Yerevan Medical University after M. Heratsi Mikayel Narimanyan are accused of embezzling the university's property worth nearly $100 thousand. They are accused of overpriced purchases (with further "payoffs") of cottages of "Tsovasar" hotel complex when the RPA Deputy Chairman was the Chairman of the University Board of Trustees. In November 2022, the politician was ordered to sign an undertaking not to leave.
