Moscow calls British politicians “hellish hypocrites” over Iran criticism
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has described British politicians who criticised the US military campaign in Iran as “hellish hypocrites,” writing on her Telegram channel.
Earlier this week, former UK Prime Minister John Major harshly criticised the United States during a speech at the Royal College of London over their military operation against Iran. He said no diplomatic effort had been made to secure a UN resolution providing legal justification for the war.
Zakharova reminded that in 2003, Major had called the US and UK invasion of Iraq “restoring normal life there” in an interview with the BBC. According to the Russian diplomat, no UN Security Council resolution provided a "legal basis" for the Iraq campaign, but the US and UK claimed the backing of the UN Security Council.
"At the time, the Anglo-Saxons had definitely 'undertaken diplomatic attempts to secure' the consent of the Security Council," she stressed.
“But he [John Major] has, once again, forgotten how they shamefully sent [former US State Secretary] Colin Powell into the UN building with a vial containing white powder to prove ‘Baghdad’s possession of WMD [Weapons of Mass Destruction]',” Zakharova wrote.
Now, in criticising the US and Israeli military operation against Iran, Major is attempting to argue that what happened in Iraq did not happen, the Russian spokeswoman suggested.
“What hellish hypocrites,” Zakharova concluded.
On February 28, the US, together with Israel, launched a military operation against Iran. Several cities in the Islamic Republic, including the capital, were targeted. In response, Iran has carried out missile and drone strikes against Israel and US airbases in the Middle East.
