Some negative factors affecting implementing Sustainable Development Goals - official

15 September 2023 14:37

Head of the Secretariat of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development, head of the department of the Azerbaijani Economy Ministry Huseyn Huseynov has said that the ongoing processes in the world have a rather negative impact on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Huseynov made these remarks at the scientific and practical conference “Sustainable Development. Reporting. Transparency” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev, Report informs.

“There is a question that makes everyone think even in today's discussions on UN platforms. Have we achieved half of the 15-year Sustainable Development Goals in 2023? The answer to this question, unfortunately, is negative because complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, other political processes, and shocks in the economic sphere are currently also having a negative impact on the process of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals,” he noted.

The head of the department noted that according to UN estimates, if current trends continue, about 600 million people will be at risk of falling below the extreme poverty line in the coming years.

“At the same time, high inflation increases economic risks around the world. As a result of these risks, income, especially for socially vulnerable groups of the population, will decrease. All these indicators have a negative impact on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” he added.
