Georgia's president faces domestic boycott

02 December 2023 15:46

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili is experiencing problems with the organization of a public speech in the republic's universities, Netgazeti writes.

According to the newspaper, the student movement "For Freedom" claims that the head of state has already been refused at Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Zugdidi state universities.

Rector of the Akaki Tsereteli Kutaisi State University Shalva Kirtadze stated that the university sees no sense in holding such an event in the near future. According to him, Zourabichvili's lecture is inappropriate.

"There is an exam period in the university, there are no lectures, students do not attend and children come only for exams. After exams they go back home to study. Therefore, this is an undesirable period for such an event," Kirtadze explained.

He added that he would say the same to any other politician, including the Prime Minister, if he wished to organize a speech at the university in the near future. Kirtadze emphasized that for the moment students should focus on their studies.

The ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party announced the launch of impeachment proceedings against Zourabichvili on September 1. It explained this decision by the violation of the basic law of the state by the president. In the opinion of the Georgian Dream, it should be considered as the beginning of Zourabichvili's European tour without the permission of the government.

On October 16, the Constitutional Court recognized the fact of violation of the law by the President.
