EU pledges support, protection to Georgia
Georgia has received historic recommendations from the European Commission on its status as a candidate for EU accession, EU Ambassador to Tbilisi Pavel Gerchinsky has said.
According to him, Brussels will side with the Georgians on issues of human rights protection, Gazeta.ru reports, citing Georgian Channel One.
"Today we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This most important document recognizes that human rights belong to each of us The protection of human rights is the foundation of the European Union. Efforts to make this vision a reality are part of the EU enlargement process and one of the nine steps Georgia must take on its path to EU membership. The recommendation to grant Georgia candidate status is historic. With it comes the responsibility to improve the protection of human rights. You can count on the EU to support you and protect your fundamental rights," Gerchinsky noted.
He added that Georgia will have to work on the protection of human rights on its way to the EU. Gerchinsky emphasized that today there are unfavorable trends in the world in the field of human rights and their universality should be firmly protected.
