Yerevan court holds hearing for Armenia's ex-president Kocharyan's son

25 July 2024 15:47

A hearing is currently being held at the court of general jurisdiction in Yerevan regarding the case of Levon Kocharyan, the son of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and a member of the "Armenia" parliamentary faction.

Judge Karen Farkhoyan is presiding over the session, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

Sergey Asaturov, the secretary of the Armenian Triathlon Federation, is also involved in the proceedings.

Levon Kocharyan was detained during an opposition rally in Yerevan on September 22 last year. The incident led to charges being brought against him for violence against a police officer.

Earlier, his father's lawyer, Hayk Alumyan, announced the potential revival of the criminal case against Robert Kocharyan and others. The Court of Cassation has requested the Constitutional Court to reclassify the case.

Previously, Armenia’s Constitutional Court declared Article 300.1, under which Kocharyan and several former officials were charged, as unconstitutional. This led to the halting of their prosecution. However, the Constitutional Court recently affirmed the constitutionality of another provision allowing charges to be altered if new evidence suggests a different crime. This may enable the reclassification of charges from the invalidated article to a different one.

Judges Seda Safaryan and Hrayr Tovmasyan have been disqualified from participating in the case due to prior involvement and bias. The decision from the Court of Cassation following the Constitutional Court's ruling will provide further clarity.

In March 2008, protests against the presidential election results led to violent clashes, resulting in 10 deaths and approximately 200 injuries.
