All airports in Nepal to remain closed until September 11
All airports in Nepal have suspended operations until September 11.
The information was shared on the Russian Embassy’s Telegram channel, Caliber.Az reports.
“The airports <…> will remain closed at least until 00:00 on September 11. A further extension of the closure cannot be ruled out,” the statement said.
Against this backdrop, the diplomatic mission has urged Russian citizens to take the announcement into account when planning travel within Nepal and, more generally, to minimise their movements.
Protests have intensified across Nepal as demonstrators rally against government actions and corruption.
The unrest was sparked last week when authorities banned 26 social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, for failing to register with the government.
Critics saw the move as an attempt to suppress an anti-corruption campaign, and the ban was lifted on September 8.
Unlike previous demonstrations, the protests are largely led by Gen Z students from colleges and universities in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Itahari. Their demands focus on the restoration of social media access and a crackdown on what they describe as entrenched corruption within the government.
The unrest has turned violent in Kathmandu and other cities, with clashes between police and protesters targeting parliament and the homes of senior politicians. At least three people were reported killed on September 9, bringing the total death toll to 22 since the protests began.
