American VP says Russia "asking for too much" to end war with Ukraine

07 May 2025 19:41

Washington believes that Russia’s demands to end the war in Ukraine are excessive, highlighting growing frustration within the Trump administration over stalled peace efforts with Moscow.

Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington on May 7, Vice President JD Vance said the US is now prioritizing a long-term resolution after Russia rejected calls for a 30-day ceasefire, Caliber.Az reports citing Politico.

Moscow argued their refusal to the proposal that a short-term pause would allow Ukraine to regroup, which it sees as counterproductive to its military strategy.

Vance signalled a shift in tone, suggesting that the Trump administration may adopt a firmer stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The Russians are asking for too much,” he said. “They’re demanding a set of conditions we don’t believe are reasonable to end the conflict.”

He further added that the immediate goal is to bring both sides to the negotiating table. “We want the Russians and the Ukrainians to agree on basic terms for opening direct talks,” Vance said. “That’s the next major step we’re working toward.”

A three-day ceasefire proposed by Russia is about to take effect on May 8 to coincide with celebrations marking the end of World War Two across the country, with the traditional performance of a large-scale military parade in Moscow's Red Square on May 8. Ukraine has rejected the proposal, calling on Russia to agree to a much more substantial 30-day ceasefire and negotiations, which, in turn, was rejected by Russia after being proposed by Washington on March 11.
