Ankara monitoring Turkish citizens on Gaza aid flotilla intercepted by Israel
Ankara is closely monitoring the situation of Turkish citizens aboard ships in the Global Sumud international flotilla that were intercepted by Israel in international waters, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said on October 3.
The ministry noted that the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv is taking steps to provide consular protection for the citizens involved, while their families are being kept informed of developments, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
The Global Sumud flotilla, which set sail for the Gaza Strip several days ago, was carrying large quantities of humanitarian aid, including medical supplies. Organisers described it as the largest such mission ever launched, with 44 vessels and volunteers on board.
Israeli forces intercepted the entire flotilla over a 38-hour period, saying the ships were attempting to breach what it called a "lawful naval blockade of Gaza."
Video released by the Israeli military showed activist Greta Thunberg on deck, receiving water and a jacket from soldiers.
