Armenia’s ruling party affirms unity amidst allegations of “government in exile”

28 March 2024 15:14

Artur Hovhannisyan, the secretary of the faction of Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract Party, has dismissed allegations of a purported "government in exile."

Hovhannisyan's comments come in response to statements attributed to remnants of the former illegal regime, particularly Samvel Shahramanyan, raising concerns about the nation's political landscape, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

Addressing the matter, Hovhannisyan emphasized the gravity of such assertions, stating, "The main issue here is not merely the existence of a government, but the fundamental respect for our state, our independence, and the democratic choices made by our people."

Highlighting the potential ramifications of such claims, Hovhannisyan suggested a deeper agenda at play, insinuating external interference aimed at destabilizing Armenia's political landscape.

"These statements align with the interests of foreign actors seeking to undermine our nation's independence. It's evident that certain forces are pursuing their own agenda, regardless of the consequences for Armenia," he stated.

Moreover, Hovhannisyan expressed concerns over Shahramanyan's alleged covert activities, calling for heightened scrutiny from relevant authorities. "Shahramanyan's actions signal clandestine behaviour, warranting immediate attention from pertinent institutions. Any threat to our statehood demands a resolute response," he asserted.

Hovhannisyan's remarks underscore the ruling party's unwavering commitment to upholding Armenia's sovereignty and democratic principles. Amidst ongoing challenges, "Civil Contract" remains steadfast in its determination to safeguard the nation's interests and counter any attempts to undermine its democratic institutions.
