Bangladesh overtakes Belarus as Russia’s largest debtor
By the close of 2024, Bangladesh emerged as Russia’s largest debtor among all nations, surpassing long-time leader Belarus.
The Asian country’s debt to Russia rose by 19% over the past 12 months, reaching $7.8 billion. In contrast, Belarus’ obligations decreased by $125 million, totaling $7.6 billion, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The report indicates that India ranks third, with its debt to Russia increasing by 19% to $4.9 billion. Egypt follows in fourth place with $4.1 billion, and Vietnam comes fifth with $1.4 billion.
Additionally, Afghanistan and Yemen each owe Russia over $1 billion, underscoring the growing financial claims Russia holds across several regions.
Earlier, President Vladimir Putin highlighted that Russia’s national debt remains the lowest globally, totaling less than 20% of GDP.
He further stressed that the country continues to implement a balanced and prudent fiscal policy, while actively working to moderate the pace of inflation.
