Armenia, Syria discuss strengthening bilateral ties, humanitarian cooperation
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the Foreign Minister of Syria’s transitional government, Asaad al-Shaibani, held a phone conversation to discuss ways to develop and strengthen bilateral relations between Yerevan and Damascus.
According to Armenia’s Foreign Ministry, the two ministers agreed to intensify political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including through reciprocal visits. They emphasised that the traditional friendship between the Armenian and Syrian peoples provides a solid foundation for further collaboration, Sputnik Armenia reports.
Potential areas of cooperation identified during the conversation include economic development, investment promotion, and humanitarian programmes. Mirzoyan expressed Armenia’s readiness to continue assisting with humanitarian demining efforts in Syrian territory.
The discussion also covered regional developments. Al-Shaibani congratulated his Armenian counterpart on the establishment of peace between Yerevan and Baku following the agreements reached in Washington on 8 August. The ministers exchanged views on steps needed to ensure peace is strengthened and maintained consistently.
Earlier this year, in January, Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, during a visit to Damascus, had also stated that Yerevan was prepared to provide humanitarian assistance and support Syria in implementing reforms.
