Armenian media reports high-profile arrests among law enforcement

18 October 2022 12:05

Armenia’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan stated during a meeting with fellow prosecutors that, based on information in her possession, she is suspicious of several judges and lawyers who might be in direct unlawful contact in various criminal cases.

As Caliber.Az reports, the Yerevan-based “Johovurd” publication wrote on the arrests made by the National Security Services of Judge Arusyak Aleksanyan and Lawyer Eric Aleksanyan that were working on a pre-trial proceeding in a prominent criminal case.

The mentioned case involves a notorious crime lord named Suren Avetisyan, nicknamed "Suro Leninakansky", who had been detained on July 22. The acting judge, lawyer and investigator were being suspected by law enforcement to be acting improperly. The special investigator in that case, Vladimir Asatryan, had already been arrested on October 14.

“The amount of attention the newly appointed Prosecutor General is giving to pre-trial proceedings is remarkable, yet besides arresting judges, lawyers, and investigators, an investigation and actions have to be taken against those prosecutors. Experts in the field are aware of what kind of cooperation can exist between the prosecutor, investigator and judge in a case”, the article writes.

According to the Armenian news outlet, further high-profile arrests can be expected within the law enforcement system in the near future.
