Armenian MP advocates EU membership as beneficial for small countries
Arman Yeghoyan, a member of Armenia's ruling faction and head of the European Integration Commission, affirmed that European Union membership unequivocally benefits Armenia as a small nation.
According to Caliber.Az citing Armenian media, Yeghoyan made these remarks during hearings on Armenia's EU membership bid initiated by the "Platform of Democratic Forces", comprising several non-parliamentary parties.
Opening the hearings, the head of the specialised commission said that their goal was to get expert answers to questions about the methods, timing, and instruments of integration.
"European integration is a set of measures and steps, it is an action consisting of numerous dimensions. The question is not whether it is good to be in the EU or not. It is clear that for small countries it is unambiguously good. Such countries give relatively little but receive relatively more. The question is and this is the task of the hearings - to discuss and understand how Armenia wants to go to the EU, with what tools and content and in what terms," he said.
Former Supreme Council deputy Azat Arshakyan, who took the floor after him, is convinced that the European Union will only benefit from Armenia's accession, at least because of its geographical location. Moreover, Arshakyan said that having such a partner and ally as Armenia is "a matter of dignity for the EU". The politician believes that Armenia is not an uninvited guest of the EU.
As a reminder, back in October 2023, speaking in the European Parliament, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU deems it possible.
