Armenian opposition MP, family summoned over corruption probe
Armenia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and current opposition MP Armen Gevorgyan has been summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office along with members of his family as part of a criminal investigation into alleged illicit enrichment, Armenian media report.
Gevorgyan, his father, wife, two sons and daughter are expected to appear for questioning on July 24, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Gevorgyan is under investigation in connection with two separate criminal cases – one involving money laundering and the other concerning bribery.
Prosecutors allege he laundered over 4.9 billion drams, equivalent to more than $12 million.
The former official held numerous senior posts between 2000 and 2018, including serving as Chief of Staff to the President, Secretary of the National Security Council, Minister for Territorial Administration and Development, and later as Deputy Prime Minister.
He is known as a close ally of former President Robert Kocharyan, whose political bloc remains a vocal critic of the current Armenian government.
