Armenian premier says war inevitable without changing constitution

01 February 2024 20:57

Both after the revolution of 2018 and after the war of 2020, the topic of the constitution remained relevant. If the state policy of Armenia is based on the Declaration of Independence, the reunification of Karabakh and Armenia, we will have war and never have peace.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this on the air of Public Radio, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Armenian media.

He noted that “many experts today say that we are not a nation-state, this is partly untrue, partly true, but I want to say something else now: where is the point after which we become a nation-state, and I believe that this is about a constitutional referendum."

Pashinyan also added that “the government cannot change the constitution, but the government can offer the people its vision of the issue, the government can talk to the people on this topic”.

“Many say that these changes in the constitution are associated with pressure from Azerbaijan, but each government must determine what basic principles it should ensure the security of the state, which is why I want to return to the topic of the army because the army can operate on sovereign territory. It is extremely important to assess and understand the risks and threats,” the Armenian prime minister said.

“I am saying that we must have an army that will defend the territory of our country - Armenia. If we strengthen the army to restore historical justice, the question arises: why should others allow this army to strengthen?” Nikol Pashinyan said.
