Azerbaijan advances Middle Corridor agenda at Intl transport forum in Greece PHOTO
Azerbaijan highlighted the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor at an international transport conference in Patras, Greece, underscoring its role in strengthening Europe–Asia connectivity amid shifting global supply chains.
According to the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, Ales Ismayilov, an analyst at the International Transport Forum (ITF) under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and a ministry representative, addressed a session of the conference focused on transport links across the Balkans and the Black Sea region.
Ismayilov said global supply chains have faced significant disruptions in recent years, increasing demand for reliable and alternative transit routes between Europe and Asia. He added that the Middle Corridor is increasingly being recognised as a strategic and cost-efficient transport artery linking the two regions.
The ministry noted that improving international connectivity was a key priority during Azerbaijan’s presidency of the ITF in 2025–2026, with the development of the Middle Corridor remaining central to its agenda.
The OECD–ITF report titled “Realising the Potential of the Middle Corridor” outlines several priority areas, including deeper regional economic integration, streamlined border and transit procedures, expanded investment in ports and railway infrastructure, and stronger public–private partnerships.
Looking ahead, the ITF work programme for 2026–2027 includes new studies aimed at improving transport efficiency and advancing the digitalisation of freight logistics across key international routes.
