Azerbaijan advances Middle Corridor development in China talks PHOTO
Azerbaijan has engaged in discussions on the development of the Middle Corridor that took place during a forum in China.
The delegation, led by ADY’s Deputy Chairman Vusal Aslanov, attended the "Meeting with Global Partners - Forum on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route," organised by China Railway Express (Sian) in the People's Republic of China, Caliber.Az reports per Azerbaijan Railways (ADY).
During the forum, the ADY commission, which included representatives from the railways of China, Kazakhstan, and Georgia, as well as other permanent members of the International Association for the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, engaged in discussions about collaborative efforts to enhance the Middle Corridor.
Following the discussions, reports were presented, with Vusal Aslanov providing updates on projects being implemented in Azerbaijan aimed at improving the effectiveness, flexibility, and diversification of the Middle Corridor. The event also culminated in the signing of a document titled "Initiative for the Joint Construction of a High-Quality Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor."
Note that, established in February 2014 with the collaboration of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia, the Middle Corridor has evolved to include Ukraine, Romania, and Poland. This trade route stretches from the China-Kazakhstan border to Europe, traversing Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and operates under a unified tariff system and the "single window" principle.
Azerbaijan's strategic location positions it as a key link between Central Asia, the South Caucasus, the Black Sea, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean. This enhances regional connectivity and supports Asian nations in diversifying their trade routes.
In 2023, cargo transported through the Middle Corridor reached approximately 2.8 million tonnes, an impressive 86% increase from the previous year. In the first half of 2024 alone, transport along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route surged by 65%, totalling 2.1 million tonnes.
With ongoing infrastructure investments and strategic partnerships, the Middle Corridor is solidifying its role as a vital trade route between Asia and Europe, fostering economic development while addressing sustainability challenges. This expansion not only advances Azerbaijan’s economic objectives but also enhances regional cooperation and integration.
