Azerbaijan applies for membership in "Islamic Eight"
Azerbaijan has applied for membership in the "Islamic Eight".
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said this in an interview with TV 100, according to Report.
"We are discussing what we will do to further strengthen the D-8 (Islamic Eight) organisation. Bangladesh currently holds the chairmanship of the organisation. We have set ourselves goals until 2030 that need to be reviewed," he said.
The minister noted that it is necessary to expand D-8.
"Azerbaijan has applied for membership in the organization. For example, can we expand the organization by making it D-20? We worked on this during our presidency of the D-8. It is necessary to clarify the criteria for membership," Cavusoglu added.
The Islamic Eight (D-8) is an international organisation for the development of cooperation between Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Türkiye. The decision to establish the organisation was made in November 1996 at the Istanbul conference "Cooperation in Development".
