Azerbaijan, Brazil strengthen diplomatic bonds on COP30 preparations

29 July 2025 18:45

As part of her working visit to Switzerland, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova engaged in a meeting with Hugo Motta, President of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, in Geneva. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation, with particular attention to joint efforts surrounding the upcoming COP30 summit in Brazil.

The two parliamentary leaders exchanged views on enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation, highlighting the potential for deeper engagement despite the geographical distance between Azerbaijan and Brazil, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The meeting took place in the context of growing inter-parliamentary ties, with both sides noting that 2023 marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Emphasis was placed on the high level of cooperation across multiple sectors, including the strengthening of legislative diplomacy.

The sides acknowledged the value of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament as an important forum for dialogue and collaboration on shared legislative priorities. They also highlighted the role of such platforms in reinforcing international cooperation.

A key focus of the discussion was the successful hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) by Azerbaijan, and the upcoming COP30, to be held in Brazil. Gafarova and Motta explored avenues for mutual cooperation in the context of COP30, particularly the organization of the Parliamentary Conference scheduled as part of the summit.

They underlined the importance of exchanging experience in hosting such high-level international events and discussed ways in which the two parliaments could collaborate to promote global climate action through legislative engagement.
