Turkish envoy hails Azerbaijan's swift support during 2016 coup attempt

Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Birol Akgün has expressed gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan for their steadfast support during the failed coup attempt in Türkiye on July 15, 2016, describing their solidarity as a powerful demonstration of the principle of "one nation, two states."

Speaking at a commemorative event in Baku marking Türkiye's Democracy and National Unity Day, Akgün said the objective of the attempted coup was to plunge the country into chaos, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The ambassador noted that the coup attempt, which he said was orchestrated by the FETÖ terrorist organization, was firmly rejected by the Turkish people.

"We are grateful to President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan for condemning the attempted coup from the very first moments and standing by Türkiye. During this process, the principle of 'one nation, two states' was once again demonstrated," Akgün said.

He emphasized that Türkiye, united as one state and one nation, will continue its fight against the FETÖ terrorist organization.

Concluding his remarks, Akgün paid tribute to those who lost their lives while resisting the coup attempt, saying their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
