Azerbaijani delegation set to visit Northern Cyprus
An Azerbaijani delegation will take part in the Peace and Freedom Day ceremony of Northern Cyprus, Azerbaijani-Turkish interparliamentary working group head Ahliman Amiraslanov said.
Speaking at an event in Baku marking Türkiye’s July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, Amiraslanov noted that a delegation from Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis would visit Northern Cyprus in two days to participate in the Peace and Freedom Day celebrations, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“Azerbaijan, alongside Türkiye, is constantly developing its relations with Northern Cyprus as well,” he emphasised.
Peace and Freedom Day in Northern Cyprus, observed on July 20, commemorates the Turkish military intervention in 1974, known as the Cyprus Peace Operation, which Turkish Cypriots view as a response to a Greek-backed coup aimed at enosis (union with Greece) and the protection of the Turkish Cypriot community from oppression.
The day is marked with official ceremonies, commemorations of martyrs, and events highlighting the establishment of peace and security for Turkish Cypriots, later contributing to the declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983.
