Armenian president calls Azerbaijan–Nakhchivan route opening vital for regional growth
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has underlined the critical importance of opening a transport corridor that would connect mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Syunik (Zangezur).
Speaking during a regional meeting, Khachaturyan said the potential reopening of the 43-kilometre stretch could serve as a gateway to Armenia’s broader development, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
“If we can open the gates of Syunik — I mean the opportunities these 43 kilometres present — you can be sure that the future will bring us significant prospects for growth,” the president stated.
He also referenced the concept of a "crossroads of peace," which he said resonates well with the international community and makes Armenia an increasingly attractive player in the region.
“This is not a major revelation. We are simply placing existing realities on the table and clearly illustrating the opportunities they present. We understand just how vital those 43 kilometres and Syunik are,” Khachaturyan added.
He reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan soon.
