Azerbaijan shares expertise on mine action at international seminar in Malaysia PHOTO

29 July 2025 16:17

Azerbaijan presented its experience in combating the mine threat during an international seminar titled “Towards a landmine-free world - case of Azerbaijan,” held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The event was jointly organized by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Malaysia, Caliber.Az reports.

Aydin Safikhanli, head of the Ombudsman’s Office, delivered a keynote address titled “The impact of mines on human rights.”

In his presentation, Safikhanli examined the devastating impact of landmines through the lens of international humanitarian and human rights law. He emphasized that landmines continue to pose a serious threat to civilian populations long after hostilities have ceased, constituting a grave violation of fundamental human rights and a persistent danger to life, health, and the environment.

He highlighted the ongoing efforts in Azerbaijan to clear territories of mines, noting the extensive contamination of liberated lands with anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. Safikhanli also discussed Armenia’s continued use of mines as a form of "mine terror" and its implications for regional stability and humanitarian safety.

The Azerbaijani representative elaborated on the measures undertaken by the government to rehabilitate mine victims and restore affected communities, as well as the country’s broader commitment to international demining standards and post-conflict recovery.

The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the global landmine crisis, promote best practices in demining, and foster international cooperation in pursuit of a mine-free world. Azerbaijan's experience, marked by both challenges and progress, was presented as a case study in resilience and international legal advocacy.
