Productive BRICS summit sparks hope for continuation of Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks
A meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the BRICS summit in Kazan has set positive momentum for continued negotiations, said Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev.
"There was a very fruitful meeting between Mr. President [of Azerbaijan] and the Prime Minister of Armenia in Kazan. We intend to continue the negotiations based on these impulses," Hajiyev said on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
According to the Azerbaijani President's press service, President Ilham Aliyev stated that Baku and Yerevan are close to reaching a final agreement on the peace treaty text and will continue negotiations after the COP-29 climate conference.
Hajiyev also said "Azerbaijan and Armenia will return to discussing the text of the peace treaty next month," adding that the main focus for Azerbaijan at present is COP-29, which runs until the end of November.
"Certainly, starting from December, a new process will begin between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the discussion and continuation of negotiations on the peace treaty text," he said.
Hajiyev also noted that there are specific issues within the document that remain unresolved. "Therefore, discussions and negotiations are ongoing at the expert level," he explained. "The Armenian side did not respond in a timely manner to our proposals regarding the text of the peace treaty. As a result, we are experiencing a delayed process in this context. Surely, starting from December, a new process will be underway."
