Azerbaijan backs stronger global order, urges end to double standards at UN debate

23 July 2025 20:28

Azerbaijan has reiterated its strong commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while calling for greater global accountability in upholding international law.

Speaking at the UN Security Council’s high-level open debate on “Promotion of international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes,” Javid Ismayilov, Chargé d'Affaires of Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, warned that selective application of international norms undermines the credibility of global governance frameworks, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“Double standards and selectivity in the application of international law inevitably lead to constant violation of international obligations,” Ismayilov stated.

He stressed that impunity for breaches of international law, coupled with the rise of ethno-nationalist ideologies, remains one of the primary obstacles to global stability and effective cooperation. “Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is essential for any progress in preventing conflict, restoring and preserving peace, establishing peaceful, mutually beneficial relations among peoples, and promoting sustainable economic and social development,” Ismayilov emphasized.

The Azerbaijani diplomat also highlighted the urgent need to combat hate speech and disinformation, noting that coordinated global efforts must hold governments and other stakeholders accountable for the spread of false narratives and intolerance. “More must be done to combat hate speech and eradicate all forms of intolerance,” he said.

Ismayilov underscored the importance of prioritizing assistance to countries undergoing post-conflict recovery and reconstruction. “Support to countries engaged in post-conflict peacebuilding, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and demining should remain a top priority for the entire international community,” he stated.

Referring to Azerbaijan’s own experience, he noted the devastating legacy of three decades of conflict, including ethnic cleansing and occupation. He emphasized Baku’s determination to rebuild and contribute to a more resilient multilateral system.

“Azerbaijan is determined to contribute to the development of international cooperation and to help make the multilateral system more effective and better prepared to fulfil its obligations,” Ismayilov concluded.
