OTS chief honours Azerbaijani heroism on Victory Day
Kubanychbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), congratulated Azerbaijan on Victory Day, posting his message on X.
“On the occasion of 8 November – Victory Day, I proudly honour the heroism and unity of the Azerbaijani people and Armed Forces, who through the 44-Day Patriotic War ensured the liberation of Shusha and the restoration of territorial integrity and historical justice,” Omuraliev wrote.
Victory Day, observed annually on November 8, commemorates Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day war of 2020 and the liberation of Shusha, a decisive turning point in the conflict. The city’s liberation after nearly three decades of occupation was described as the “pinnacle” of Azerbaijan’s counter-offensive.
The war began on September 27, 2020, and ended with a trilateral ceasefire signed on November 10, 2020, by Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia. Following the conflict, President Ilham Aliyev declared November 8 as Victory Day, marking the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and national unity.
Each year, the anniversary is celebrated with official ceremonies, military parades, and festivities in Baku, Shusha, Khankendi, and other liberated regions. Cultural and sporting events, including the “Victory Run” in the capital, also form part of the nationwide commemorations.
