Azerbaijan’s Institute of Linguistics sets up new department to study toponyms of Western Azerbaijan, Karabakh
Department of Toponymy has been established at the Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi, which operates under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
The division will deal with the study of the toponyms of western Azerbaijan and the onomastic reconstruction of the toponyms of the liberated territories, Report informs.
The toponyms in Karabakh underwent distortion from time to time, during the Armenian occupation some toponyms and several other geographic names were replaced by Armenian ones.
The Toponymy Department will conduct research for the study of the toponyms, and the nationalization of liberated territories’ toponyms.
The Department will be headed by Elchin Ismayilov, a leading researcher of the Institute of Linguistics, candidate of philological sciences, and associate professor.
