Azerbaijan takes action on behalf of citizens detained in Podgorica, Montenegro
Sabina Aliyeva, Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman), has formally addressed her Montenegrin counterpart, Siniša Bjeković, concerning the detention of multiple Azerbaijani citizens in Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital.
Aliyeva urged Montenegrin authorities to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the rights of Azerbaijani nationals in custody are fully protected, in strict accordance with Montenegro’s national legislation and international human rights obligations, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ombudsman’s press service.

Aliyeva stressed the crucial importance of upholding the detainees’ right to the presumption of innocence, providing access to legal counsel, and guaranteeing the availability of translation services to ensure fair treatment.
She further underscored the necessity of preventing any acts of discrimination, incitement to hatred, or hostility based on ethnic, national, or religious affiliation, emphasizing adherence to the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in international human rights standards.
