Montenegro responds to Azerbaijani ombudsman regarding citizen’s detention
Montenegro’s Human Rights Ombudsman Siniša Bjeković has officially responded to a letter from Azerbaijan’s Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva regarding the detention of an Azerbaijani citizen in Podgorica.
Bjeković stated that the matter is under close supervision, and direct communication has been established with the police, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ombudsman’s press service.
He assured that Azerbaijani citizens in detention are being treated with sensitivity and care.
Bjeković emphasised that the rights of every citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan will be protected, including safeguards against any form of discrimination, incitement of hatred, or hostility based on ethnic, national, or religious grounds.
Montenegro’s ombudsman also noted that the progress of the investigation and judicial proceedings involving the detained individuals will be monitored within the scope of his authority.
On October 29, Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner Sabina Aliyeva formally appealed to her Montenegrin counterpart, urging the authorities to ensure that the rights of detained Azerbaijani nationals are fully respected in line with Montenegro’s legislation and international obligations.
She stressed the importance of guaranteeing legal assistance, translation services, and the presumption of innocence, while preventing any acts of discrimination or incitement to hatred based on ethnic or national identity.
