Azerbaijan’s taekwondo team shines at 3rd CIS Games with 22-medal haul
Azerbaijan’s national taekwondo team has delivered a commanding performance at the 3rd CIS Games, securing a total of 22 medals as the martial arts competitions came to a close in Mingachevir.
Hosted for the first time by Azerbaijan, the Games saw the taekwondo events staged at the “Kür” Olympic Training and Sports Center, where local athletes made a strong showing on the second day of the tournament, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Eleven Azerbaijani competitors mounted the podium in various weight categories. Vasif Salimov claimed the country’s latest gold medal in the men’s 68 kg division. Bronze medals were awarded to Nigar Abdullayeva and Leyla Bashirova (both 57 kg), Samarrukh Osmanova and Zemfira Hasanzada (49 kg), Zemfira Aslanova and Narmin Ansari (67 kg), Fuad Maharramli and Mahammad Hasanli (58 kg), Rza Asadli (80 kg), and Khan Mammadzada (87 kg).
These results follow a strong start for the team earlier in the competition, where Azerbaijani taekwondo athletes collected 3 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
With this final tally, the Azerbaijani taekwondo contingent concludes its participation in the Games with 4 gold, 2 silver, and 16 bronze medals—an impressive achievement that underscores the country's growing prowess in the sport.
The 3rd edition of the CIS Games has brought together 1,624 athletes from 13 countries and will officially conclude on October 8.
