Azerbaijan unveils major infrastructure boom in Karabakh with 44 road projects
Since 2020, 44 road construction projects have been underway in the Karabakh and East Zangazur economic regions under Azerbaijan's "I State Program on the Great Return to the Territories Liberated from Occupation," following presidential directives.
According to the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads, the projects involve the construction of 45 tunnels, with a total length of 70.8 km, 447 bridges covering 9,581.6 m, and 16 viaducts totalling 3,871 m, Caliber.Az reports.
So far, the construction has been completed for 28 tunnels spanning 59.6 km, 392 bridges with a total length of 8,339.1 m, and 9 viaducts stretching 1,695 m.
To recall, following the victory, the government launched a comprehensive reconstruction initiative under the “I State Program on the Great Return to the Territories Liberated from Occupation of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” This program prioritizes sustainable resettlement, economic growth, and regional development in Karabakh.
Demining activities have been a critical first step, with over 1.5 billion square meters of land cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance between 2020 and 2024. Efforts are now focused on creating workplaces, improving living conditions, and revitalizing the region’s infrastructure.
