Azerbaijan detains Iranian citizens upon drug smuggling on Caspian Sea coast VIDEO/PHOTO
Iranian citizens 32-year-old Gaffar Gyzyl and 34-year-old Behzat Garanejat have been detained by Azerbaijani authorities in a joint operation carried out by the Interior Ministry and the State Border Service (SBS).
The arrest occurred on the shores of the Caspian Sea, in the city of Sumgayit, where the two men were caught engaging in drug trafficking activities, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Interior Ministry's press service.
According to the press service, the suspects were found operating a boat equipped with a specialized Yamaha engine.
Authorities discovered a large haul of illegal narcotics, including 11.68 kilograms of marijuana, 1.51 kilograms of heroin, and 4,400 methadone pills. The two men, who were also involved in fishing activities, were smuggling drugs into the country via the Caspian Sea.
The operation was part of ongoing efforts by Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies to combat drug smuggling and other illegal activities along the Caspian coast. The detainees are now under investigation, and further details of the case are expected to emerge as authorities continue their work.
