Azerbaijani fighter arrives in Baku ahead of UFC fight night main event PHOTO
Azerbaijani mixed martial arts fighter Rafael Fiziev has arrived in Baku ahead of his headline bout at UFC Fight Night Baku, where he is set to face Mexico’s Manuel Torres.
According to the Baku City Circuit Operating Company, Fiziev was welcomed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by family members, friends, and fans upon his arrival, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The lightweight contender said returning to compete in his home country carries special significance.
“Coming back to Baku, to my native Azerbaijan, is a special feeling. An important and demanding fight lies ahead. I feel great, I'm fully prepared, and highly motivated. Right now, all my focus is on the fight, and I can't wait to step into the Octagon. Fans can expect an exciting contest. Whenever an Azerbaijani faces a Mexican fighter, it's always interesting, and this time will be no different,” Fiziev said.
Discussing his opponent, Fiziev said his team had closely analyzed Manuel Torres’ fighting style, noting his aggressive approach and tendency to finish fights early.
“Many people say that my opponent often finishes fights in the first round. But in mixed martial arts, everything can change in an instant-one punch or one mistake can decide the outcome. Torres fights aggressively, constantly moves forward, and puts full power into his strikes. He has indeed finished several of his recent fights early, but that has not affected my preparation or mindset in any way. Anything can happen inside the Octagon,” he said.
He added that preparations for the fight had been ongoing for years and called on local fans to support him at the arena.
“I invite all our fans to support us at the arena. Your energy gives us additional strength. I am confident that with the support of the crowd, we will proudly represent Azerbaijan and create an unforgettable atmosphere together,” Fiziev said.
UFC Fight Night Baku is scheduled for June 27 at the National Gymnastics Arena, with Fiziev headlining the lightweight main event against Torres.
