Azerbaijan’s national taekwondo team delivered an exceptional performance on the opening day of the 3rd CIS Games, collecting a total of 11 medals — including three gold, two silver, and six bronze — across various weight divisions.
Day one of the competition featured bouts in seven weight categories, with champions determined in the men’s 54 kg, 63 kg, 74 kg, and 87 kg divisions, as well as the women’s 46 kg, 53 kg, and 62 kg classes, Caliber.Az reports.
Azerbaijani athletes demonstrated their competitive edge and technical prowess throughout the tournament. Ziya Hasanli (63 kg), Humay Dadashova (46 kg), and Maryam Mammadova (53 kg) each captured gold medals, securing Azerbaijan’s place at the top of the taekwondo standings for the day.
The silver medal podium saw Eljan Aliyev (74 kg) and Umid Rahimzada (54 kg) earn well-fought second-place finishes, narrowly missing out on gold.
Azerbaijan also enjoyed a strong showing in the bronze medal matches, with Tamerlan Yagubov (54 kg), Allahverdi Mammadov and Zeynal Aliyev (both in 87 kg), as well as Salima Guliyeva (46 kg), Nilufar Borchi (53 kg), and Nargiz Kazimova (62 kg) each claiming third place in their respective categories.
The competition, which brings together athletes from member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, aims to foster regional sports development and camaraderie through high-level athletic performance.
