Azerbaijani wrestlers win tournament in Italy

The Matteo Pellicone Wrestling Memorial is underway in Italy's capital city of Rome.

Ulvi Ganizade outclasses Christian Istvan Vancha (5:1) from Bulgaria in the U-23 European championship qualification stage, the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation told Oxu.Az.

The Azerbaijani athlete was superior to the Moldavian athlete Valentin Petici with the same score in the 1/4 finals, while in the semifinals he was stronger than Norwegian athlete Haavard Joergensen (3:1).

The last athlete who represented Azerbaijan was competing in the Greco-Roman wrestling on the second day of the competition.

Unfortunately, Ganizade failed to compete in the final against Lithuanian athlete Kristupas Sleiva due to a leg injury. He grabbed a silver medal.

The team Azerbaijan grabbed a total of nine medals, including four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals in the tournament. The Azerbaijani team, gaining 148 points in the overall standings, ranked first in the competition. Hungary ranked second (102 points) while Iran ranked third (98 points).
