Behind scenes of attack on Armenian prime minister's son Is it a signal to the premier himself?

19 May 2023 13:51

The incident with the attack on the son of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the centre of Yerevan could be outlined for several reasons:

1. He demonstrates an inadequate assessment of the risks and threats by the head of the Armenian government and the negligence of his security forces, which did not ensure the safety of PM Pashinyan's only son. “Closeness to the people”, “Armenian democracy”, etc are not a matter of fact here. In the same USA, the immediate relatives of the first persons are protected by the Secret Service.

2. The level of polarisation in Armenian society and the process of radicalisation of its extreme revanchist camp (at the same time, it is important to remember that all Armenian society suffers from revanchism to one degree or another) has reached its peak. This factor coexists within the rich traditions of the share of terrorism in Armenian political life.

3. The attack on Ashot Pashinyan exactly at the time when his father is on a visit to Iceland and publicly, on a Western discussions platform, declares the recognition of the territory of Azerbaijan in 86.600 square meters. km., is coupled with the upcoming Moscow round of negotiations - perhaps more than a mere coincidence, it is a threatening signal to PM Pashinyan himself.

4. The logic of paragraph 3 sits well with the activation of "processes" in the zone of temporary responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping mission in the Karabakh economic region, where in recent days they have been trying to activate the effigy of Ruben Vardanyan again; First Karabakh War culprit Samvel Babayan refreshed his political engagement, Arayik Harutyunyan's "resignation" was initiated, and social networks are partially blocked.

However, regardless of the processes in Yerevan and Khankendi, the decisive facts on the ground were created by Azerbaijan. Further steps that the Armenian side will take (including under external influence) will affect the formula, but not the essence of Azerbaijan's further actions. And this essentially boils down to the well-known phrase of President Aliyev - "Karabakh is Azerbaijan and an exclamation mark."
