Berlin proposes ships, aircraft, drones to reinforce NATO's European flanks
Germany is prepared to provide NATO with warships, fighter aircraft and drones to help offset gaps left by US military systems, the German media reported on July 8, citing sources.
According to the report, Berlin plans to contribute military assets to reinforce security on the alliance's north-western and south-eastern flanks.
Germany is expected to allocate one F125-class frigate to each area. The vessel assigned to the south-eastern flank would be equipped with the IRIS-T air defence system, enhancing its air-defence capabilities.
For NATO's south-eastern region, Berlin is also prepared to deploy two P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. Meanwhile, eight Eurofighter fighter jets would be assigned to the alliance's north-eastern flank.
The proposed package further includes one K130 corvette, five Heron TP unmanned aerial vehicles and two US-made MQ-9B strike drones.
