Black Sea Electric Cable Project to strengthen Europe's energy security Statement by Azerbaijani PM

26 October 2023 13:40

Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov has said that the project of laying an electric cable through the Black Sea will play an important role in ensuring European energy security.

Asadov made these remarks at the international Tbilisi Silk Road Forum, according to Report.

He reminded that the Black Sea Electric Cable Project, through which Azerbaijan will supply electricity to Europe, was signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary in 2022.

“Today we are building a green energy bridge to Europe. Bulgaria has already expressed interest in participating in the project. We hope that the project will make an additional contribution to the energy security of many European countries,” he said.

Asadov also reminded that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Azerbaijan and the EU in July 2022, according to which the volume of natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Europe will be doubled by 2027.

Meanwhile, the prime minister noted that Azerbaijan has initiated a number of regional projects in the South Caucasus over the past 30 years.

“Among these projects are the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the South Caucasus corridor, the Baku International Sea Trade Port, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the Southern Gas Corridor, which includes the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, etc.,” he said.

Asadov emphasised that Azerbaijan and Georgia were the first countries that supported the idea of restoring the Great Silk Road.

“Thousands of kilometres of roads and railways have been laid, international airports have been put into operation, the civil sea and air fleets have been expanded as a result of the Azerbaijani government’s investments in transport infrastructure,” the prime minister said, adding that Azerbaijan has the biggest fleet in the Caspian Sea.

The prime minister noted the importance of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia in several spheres.
“We see the results of this cooperation. Important results were obtained in a short period of time in terms of cost, speed and quality as a result of the work carried out to improve the efficiency of the Middle Corridor,” he added.
