Global think tanks to receive report on Armenia aiding Russia's sanctions evasion PHOTO
The international public association for economic research, Economics, announced that it will send a detailed report on Russia and Armenia’s sanctions violations to think tanks in Europe and the United States.
According to Caliber.Az correspondent, the organisation’s chairman, Fikret Yusifov, made the announcement.
“We will send our report on the economic analysis of Armenia's import and export operations in English to think tanks in Europe and the United States that study Russian-Ukrainian issues. Azerbaijani NGOs have repeatedly sent open letters to the heads of the main bodies responsible for implementing and monitoring sanctions against Russia, calling for an audit of Armenia's import and export operations. These appeals emphasise that since the start of Russia's war with Ukraine, there have been changes in the import and export operations of Armenia, which has the lowest foreign trade turnover in the South Caucasus, which does not correspond to its economic potential,” Yusifov said during a briefing on October 3.
Malik Hasanov, an economist and expert at Economics, highlighted that Armenia and Russia’s illegal and non-compliant trade relations distort information about the current economic situation in the region and generate serious inaccuracies.
“Armenia must act responsibly and boldly, without providing Russia with a corridor for evading sanctions, as this weakens global efforts to restore peace and stability in Ukraine and encourages violations of international law,” the briefing stated.
Zaur Ibrahimli, a member of the board of the National Forum of NGOs of Azerbaijan, also condemned the arrangement.
He stressed that Russia’s use of Armenia to circumvent international sanctions directly violates international law.
“The relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly define the responsibility of states for actions that violate international law. A state that creates conditions for another state to commit an internationally wrongful act also bears international responsibility. These actions between Russia and Armenia should be approached through the prism of international law,” Ibrahimli said.
