Bundestag member raises concerns over US nuclear weapons in Germany
Gregor Gysi, a member of the German Bundestag, has expressed concerns about the deployment of US nuclear weapons on German soil, warning that it could make Germany a potential target in the event of a global conflict.
In an interview, Gysi stated, "It is not peace, but wars that become more likely when the world is increasingly armed. That is why we advocate for a different approach: de-escalation and the use of diplomatic means to achieve a balance of interests while strictly adhering to international law," Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The politician further remarked, "The US has placed nuclear weapons in Germany. I am concerned that this could make us a target in case of war."
On February 23, snap parliamentary elections were held in Germany. The Left Party secured fifth place, gaining 8.8 per cent of the vote and winning 64 parliamentary seats. Unconfirmed reports suggest that US nuclear weapons remain stationed in Germany as part of NATO's strategic deterrence concept. It is believed that up to 20 US nuclear warheads are located at Büchel Air Base near. In March 2010, the Bundestag voted by a majority to authorize the government to negotiate with the US about removing these nuclear weapons from German soil. However, the then German cabinet declared that it would not take unilateral action without coordinating with NATO partners.
