Cargo traffic on North-South corridor’s Azerbaijani section triples

14 June 2023 18:50

About 317,000 tonnes of cargo was carried along the Azerbaijani section of the International North-South Transport Corridor in five months of 2023.

Azerbaijan Railways Spokesperson Sanubar Nazarova made the remarks during the media tour to the Sumgayit-Yalama station, Report informs.

According to her, this is three times more than for the corresponding period of 2022.

After upgrading the road infrastructure and increasing the speed limit at the Sumgayit-Yalama station, more customers will be attracted and cargo will be transported faster in this direction, Nazarova assured.

The North-South Transport Corridor aims to reduce the delivery time of cargo shipment from India to Russia, as well as to Northern and Western Europe. It is a 7,200-km-long multi-mode network of ship, rail, and routes for moving freight between India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

The foundation of the North-South Transport Corridor was laid on the basis of the intergovernmental agreement signed between Russia, Iran and India on September 12, 2000. Azerbaijan joined this agreement in 2005. In total, 13 countries have ratified the agreement (the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Republic of Armenia, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Sultanate of Oman, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Türkiye and  Ukraine).
