Tajikistan proposes green digital corridor with Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan and Tajikistan could jointly establish a green digital corridor linking Asia and Europe, Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Industry and New Technologies Aziz Nazar said.

Nazar made the remarks during a panel discussion at the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2026) in Baku, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

He noted that Tajikistan currently generates 98% of its electricity from clean and renewable energy sources.

“Our hydropower potential exceeds 527 billion kilowatt-hours per year, which is the eighth-largest figure in the world and enough to cover the needs of all Central Asia three times. The Rogun Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan has a capacity of up to 3,780 megawatts and is adding capacity to turn Eurasia into a green battery in the era of artificial intelligence,” Nazar said.

He added that last year, the Tajik government, with support from international financial institutions led by the World Bank, mobilized more than $3 billion for the construction of the hydropower plant.

According to Nazar, Tajikistan’s rivers, water resources, and cool mountain climate provide the country with significant potential for sustainable computing.

“Tajikistan has brought the nexus between water and artificial intelligence to the global agenda in partnership with the UN. We know that freshwater will play a key role in the future transition to green technologies. Tajikistan’s mountains are the source of 60% of water resources for all Central Asian countries,” he noted.

Nazar also said Tajikistan supports initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development in Central Asia through artificial intelligence, including the establishment of a regional AI center in Dushanbe.

“We see a natural alliance with Azerbaijan. If the Middle Corridor can carry goods and energy, it can also carry data and computing power,” he added.
