Civilian death toll in Iran surpasses 1,100
At least 1,114 civilians in Iran have been killed since the outbreak of the war on February 28, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).
The figure includes 183 children, most under the age of 10, HRANA said in its latest update on March 5. The organisation is still working to verify over 900 additional reported deaths, Caliber.Az reports via CNN.
Some recent strikes have hit civilian sites protected under international humanitarian law, including a high school and several medical clinics, the agency added.
The current conflict’s death toll in Iran is approaching that of last summer’s 12-day war between Iran, Israel, and the US, which HRANA estimated claimed 1,190 lives in Iran.
Iran’s National Emergency Organization has reported that as many as 6,000 people have been wounded so far. In addition, dozens of deaths, including six US troops, have been reported elsewhere in the Middle East as a result of Tehran’s retaliatory strikes, according to local authorities.
