COP29 in focus: Baku holds NCQG dialogue, names key reps for climate initiatives

09 October 2024 16:24

Baku recently hosted a high-level ministerial dialogue focused on the new collective quantified climate finance target (NCQG).

This development was announced on the official social media page of COP29, which noted that the event marked an important step on the path to the 29th session of the COP, Caliber.Az reports.

The COP29 Chairmanship warmly welcomed delegates from across the globe, emphasizing the significance of the discussions as the world prepares for the UN Climate Change Conference in 2024.

The chairmanship also announced the appointment of ministerial representatives who will oversee key areas such as adaptation, mitigation, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

These appointments aim to enhance political engagement and elevate the COP29 Presidency's priorities on the global agenda.

It is reported that the appointment of the representatives is to help guide and inform parties in the political consultations on these topics at the UN 2024 UN Pre-Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (Pre-COP29).

“The COP29 Ministerial Representatives play an important role in enhancing political engagement in the run-up to the conference, as well as raising the key priorities of the COP29 Presidency on the global political agenda,” the statement said.

Ireland’s Ministe for Environment, Eamon Ryan, and Costa Rica’s Minister for Environment, Franz Tattenbach, were named climate adaptation representatives, while Norway’s Minister of Climate Environment Tore O. Sandvik and South Africa’s Minister of Forestry and Environment, Dion Travers George, will focus on climate change mitigation.

Singapore’s Grace Fu Hai Yen and New Zealand’s Simon Watts will guide policy on Article 6, which pertains to carbon market mechanisms. Additionally, Australia’s Chris Bowen and Egypt’s Yasmine Fouad have been appointed representatives for the NCQG.

Italy’s Special Envoy for Climate Change Francesco Carvaro and Kazakhstan’s Special Representative Zulfia Suleymanova were selected as spokespersons for Transparency and Reporting. These representatives will play crucial roles in the lead-up to COP29, providing guidance and shaping discussions on critical climate issues.
